Motion Sickness

Most people, at some point in their lives have experienced motion sickness, while being transported in some way. There is a greater prevalence in women than men, and in children between the ages of 3 and twelve years of age. It is characterized by initially feeling dizzy, and breaking out into a cold sweat, followed by nausea, vomiting, and apathy. Depending how you are being transported, it can have several different names. Such as sea sickness, air sickness, or car sickness, but all types are thought to come from the same basic cause.

Most over the counter antinausea medications are designed to treat nausea and vomiting related to motion sickness by focusing on the middle ear to restore a sense of balance and to reduce the feeling of nausea.

If the nausea doesn’t respond to over the counter medicines, or lasts more than twelve hours, it’s probably time to call your doctor. For severe nausea, the prescription Antivert may be given. It takes a little longer to start working than dimenhydrinate, but it effects last much longer.
